Chapter 3---The Biosphere
reading--- p. 64-79 and 80 - 125
***studies of our environment and the interactions of humans with nature***
Bio = "study of life or of the living"
sphere = "space or area around "
Think of issues or events:
1. In the World we learned there was a serious water pollution problems in Brazil for the 2016 Olympics.
2. In North America there are serious forest fires from Canada into the Western USA states
3. In Iowa there has been issues of the chicken flu and other livestock concerns. ( remember those of you in 4H and FFA ? )
4. Many World leaders and even our celebrities today talk to about the environment and climate change.
5. About two years ago when the Pope visits the USA he mentioned global warming.
*** Can you think of activities or events that affect our environment?
-------------------------------------------------------
New Lesson: -
Interactions/ Interdependence
A. Ecology is the scientific study of how all organisms in our surroundings and how we react to them and our actions.
(we all live in these World houses)
B. Biosphere = the combinations of all these "houses".
( land, waters, air or atmosphere)
Places around our World
1. ***The highest point on the surface of Earth = ?
Its 29, 029 feet above sea level (Tibet/Nepal) of Asia)
This is about 6 miles above sea-level.

2. The lowest point is 35, 994 ft. below sea-level in the Pacific floor.
(this is over 7 miles below sea-level)
(this is over 7 miles below sea-level)
3. The deepest point of our entire Earth = 3,959 miles inside our core.
4. The highest our atmosphere is from space = 621 miles above Earth.
Watch two interesting videos from ESPN of a man falling to Earth from Space: ( he made 3 attempts in l965-66)

C. Web of Interdependence
( interactions of organisms within the many biospheres)
1. good example is the owl and mouse or a rabbit and a fox.
@ Try to think of some examples. I have shown some videos at the end of class the last few weeks.
2. Below I show you a few other examples of this interaction where organisms exists with each other.

LESSON----TWO
A. LEVELS OF ORGANIZATIONS
1. species = study of a single type of organism.
The key definition = the same species is a pair can breed and produce a fertile offspring.
Above is a wolf-malamute hybrid.
This pup can be fertile and reproduce.
***thus = Wolves and dogs are of the same species !!!!
-------------------------------------------------------
Below is a "molly"--- what is it a cross of?

***thus = Wolves and dogs are of the same species !!!!
-------------------------------------------------------
Below is a "molly"--- what is it a cross of?
The above guy is called a "john mule."
***Its a long story, but basically they are not of the same species because most of the time they can not produce offspring.
In other words, a mule will be infertile "usually."
---------------------------------------------------
Mules are from breeding a male donkey and female horse.
A male donkey = a "jack" and a female horse = a "mare".
---------------------------------------------------
Hinny = from breeding a female donkey to a male horse.
A female donkey= a "jenny" and male horse = "stallion".

3. Communities = animals and plant life living in an area.
*Ecologists study various groups that live in the same area.
( A good example is the African savanna plains --"Lion King". )

Ecosystems are a combination of all the variety of communities of animals and plants (organisms) and
the design or type of physical location.

Above is the biome of central and southern Africans ----Plains or Savannah Plains.
(It has its own patterns of weather and certain organisms)
