"Welcome to the World of Science and to all of you who wish you were ME ."
"You d be so lucky !!!!!!!! "

Introduction to Environment Science and the Nature of Life:
Lesson ONE:
I. Science:
A. The goal of science is to investigate and understand the natural world.
B. To explain events in the natural world, and to use those explanations to make useful predictions.
C. Try to think of some examples in your life of "issues and events":
**** This is where you are to think to yourself quietly****
D. Later you will share with a partner and later entire class.
------------------------------------------------------
Mr. Myrtue example:
1. I had a problem this summer: Its really hot, my dogs loved to swim, so where can I go to take my dogs?
I discovered Brushy Creek Park.
2. I wanted to ride my bicycle at the trails of Brushy Creek but they were very steep in places and rugged. How to do that?
I bought a mt. bicycle.
( next year stolen in Arizona :) )
3. In the news a dentist in Minnesota shot / killed a tamed-lion in Africa on a hunting trip.
I asked " why did he do that? " This gave me love for animals even more!
4. I learned that NASA reached and past Pluto this summer. I also learned NASA plans to plant and try to grow food on Mars soon.
** I wonder and ask myself about the future and the hope of NASA doing more trips?
6. There are 2 new movies about hiking and backpacking. I hope again someday to do that. I wonder if any of my students would enjoy that?
7. Why did all of those chicken farms have to kill their chickens in summer of 2015 ?
Do any of you ever wonder about our environment and nature?
Here are a few issues that maybe you find interesting or wonder about relating to our class:
-------------------------------------------------------
1. Is there really climate change and if so:
What new climate are we now in ?
2. Are those polar bears really less in numbers? What are the real populations of them around the World?
3. Are the human populations of the World's countries increasing or decreasing? What will the World human population be in 50 years?
4. Will there ever be a cure for cancer? What causes cancers and are there things people can do to help avoid or prevent cancers?
4. What is the future of Iowa and farming? What about the windmills in Iowa and using ethanol gas?
Is there a new method of fuels and uses for all our needs of utilities?
Will we have a new method of transportation and cars? How will this affect our environment? Heard about the new cars and how you will not have to sit at the wheel and steer them?
5. The best kept secret of our World problem = low fresh water supplies.
6. Other big secret is that or our World's population is growing at a very fast rate !!! ( what is it? )
-------------------------------------------------------
Lesson Two---- ---"this is so exciting---I love science.
Scientific Method or steps: observation, collect data, hypothesis and then make an inference ( final conclusion)
(Let s look at a more exact example) :
1. first ASK A QUESTION
2. YOU WANT AN ANSWER (HYPOTHESIS or guess on an answer)
3. EXPERIMENT
4. OBSERVATION
5. ANALYSIS
6. CONCLUSION
***THIS order of solving a problem can vary and might be repeated ***
Watch this video below on the steps of the scientific method:
Get out your journal to record all your thoughts and ideas:

Lesson 3 :
II. Using Science as a way to know or be aware of "things".
A. Example: ( text book -page 6 ) -----scientists found a corpse of a
well preserved human and discovered it was about 5000 yrs. old.
B. Current finding from this summer of 2015 found four corpse of men
who were from JamesTown, Virginia back in the early 1600's and part
of the group who had the husband of Pocahontas.
***both examples used the steps of the scientific methods to learn
the identifications and information of each corpse.

Summary of Science and its history: ( read pages 6-15)
C. All the steps of how to solve problems are:
1. state the problem 2. for an opinion at the start
3. experiment or test ideas 4. record your findings
5. come up with your conclusion --perhaps repeat or do more studies into your problem you are working on.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Who killed President Kennedy? Will Iran build nuclear warheads? Is the social security system end soon?
Why do terrorists attack people at shopping malls?
What can be done so people don t use cell phones when driving cars? Is smoking pot good for you to do?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D. Science and Human values: page 7 in text
There are many examples in environmental science of topics and issues that are debated around the World.
Here are a list of a few you may or may not have opinions of: I will summarize them with pictures.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
You are to try to decide what the issue is for each pic.
This is your assignment for this week: I want you to write 3-5 thought for each picture. You can use online
help if you want. This is due on Thursday, Sept. 17th.
Get out your journal and start describing what you are thinking about as you look at each picture below:
Be sure to number each picture and write about your thought for each one. ( in your journal)
1. Write down 3-4 comments. You be wise to use online sources of information.
2. On Tuesday, I will give you more instructions for this individual project that will lead into next week's.
SOME OF THESE PICTURES ARE VERY DISTURBING:

From the 12 themes of the above examples we will do some research
next week in small groups of 2 or 3 classmates.
Before we get into all the chapters and topics of Environmental Science I wish for all of you to explore some of the many topics we might study this school year and learn more of.
I will give an example in class of 2 unique issues you may or may not be aware of concerning issues in E.S.
This entire project will take about 2 weeks for all of us to do. Enjoy : )
